I remember when the authorities in New Jersey started filling in the Meadowlands in the 1960s and '70s, first as a garbage dump, then with landfill for building on, because they were 'awful smelly marshes'. Swamps! "Drain the swamp," the rich developers cried. Little did they realize that the Meadowlands were the single most important water filtration system in the region, and a stopover for countless migratory birds for millennia before man got involved in their destruction. Then a true wasteland rather than a wetland. I lived there and I cried when I drove through on the NJ Turnpike. You had to close your windows well in advance to avoid the stench of the garbage dumps. If one believes a recent history book on the subject, the water quality has recovered under ecologically savvy management. Perhaps it is possible to save the earth, but right now, I am not a believer in the positive.
The report concludes that the current global response is insufficient; ‘Transformative changes’ are needed to restore and protect nature. They believe that opposition from vested interests can be overcome for the public good, but in my estimation not when people like Mike Pompeo see the melting Arctic as an opportunity for drilling and mining. Yes, I do believe in the Commonage conundrum. Yet, the report shows that the least destroyed lands are those occupied by indigenous people. Remember the Native American shedding a tear for the garbage strewn plains of America in TV commercials?
By the Numbers – Key Statistics and Facts from the Report
General
- 75%: terrestrial environment “severely altered” to date by human actions (marine environments 66%)
- 47%: reduction in global indicators of ecosystem extent and condition against their estimated natural baselines, with many continuing to decline by at least 4% per decade
- 28%: global land area held and/or managed by Indigenous Peoples, including >40% of formally protected areas and 37% of all remaining terrestrial areas with very low human intervention
- +/-60 billion: tons of renewable and non-renewable resources extracted globally each year, up nearly 100% since 1980

Climate Change
