On to Anglesey

We decided to drive around the coast of Anglesey which we thought would take about three hours. Alex had a sore throat so we found him some lozenges. He kept taking left turns towards the sea off the main road and we kept getting stuck on dead-end roads in small villages with honky-tonk resorts. We were directly across the Menai Straits from Plas Menai and Caernarfon. When we got to where there was a designated walking trail, we parked and decided to do a looped trail that Google showed us. No one else was about.

On the way out, we scrambled along the rocky shore, which had clearly been maintained for walkers. We did not wear our hiking boots and we should have. It was quite wet and our running shoes were soon sopping. This part of the island was lovely, with deep blue-green sea, high rocky coast and sheep feeding in fields above. The wildflowers were just waking up and it was lovely in the sunshine, but chill wind.

When we got to within range of the sewage treatment plant, I wanted to turn back but Alex was convinced there was another way on higher ground. Sure enough, we soon found a tiny road that led to fields that went on to the parking lot where we left the car. It was a lovely walk. But now time for lunch.

Many places we spotted were closed as it was early in the season. But we found one place that served lovely sandwiches and soups in a pretty small town off the beaten path. After lunch, we continued on towards Holyhead but turned off just before to head to Conwy. I had learned that Drew Pritchard of Salvage Hunters TV show had opened a shop there. We were hooked on that show and I wanted to check it out.  It also has a massive castle and medieval walls. Might as well make the best of our time.

The drive across to Conwy was dramatic with tunnels bored into the slate walls along the sea front, and slate quarries in the hills. Conwy turned out to be a lovely town but most things were closed by the time of our arrival around 5:30 pm. We didn't have a reservation but we saw an Inn across from the Castle that had an ideal location and a pizza restaurant downstairs. So we checked into the Bridge Inn and ended up staying for two nights.
